Burgundy by request Wine Tours

Tracy_Thurling_Burgundy_by_Request_la-terrasse-des-climats-partner-01Tracy Thurling is tour director and founder of Burgundy by request, her wine tour company.

“Having first worked in this beautiful region in 1992, I spent several seasons as a Tour Guide and Tour Director on the luxury hotel barges that cruise on the stunning waterways of Burgundy.

Following a successful management career in overseas tourism I decided to return to my first love – France and Burgundy, an area rich in culture, heritage, wine and the art of fine living. What could be better?

I then secured a job, which I loved, advising clients about wine in a prestigious Côte d’Or wine cellar, but found that I missed sharing my love of the region with other people. Deciding to combine the two I set up Burgundy by Request to introduce visitors to the rich cultural heritage of Burgundy. After a couple of years I realised that there was such a demand for personalised tours I decided to leave the wine cellar altogether and concentrate on providing purely personal tours to lovers of Burgundy.

Since then I have honed my skills on trade courses at the prestigious Ecole des Vins in Beaune and have become a professional wine taster for the Concours des Feminalise and the Guide Hachette. My latest project is instructing the students at the local technical college studying for a qualification in Wines and Spirits.”

Burgundy private Tours

  • Classic Wine and History (for 2): After pick up from your hotel by your private guide, we visit the acclaimed 15th century Hospices de Beaune. A charity hospital, still maintained today with the proceeds from its famous wine auction. We then drive into the vineyards for a private wine tasting and commentary based on your thirst for knowledge. After lunch at a restaurant of your choice, your local expert will guide you on a visit to the Château of Clôs de Vougeot, home of the Confrérie des Chevaliers de Tastevin. In the 16th century the Renaissance style château was added to a wine farm originally built in the 12th century by the monks of Cîteaux. A final wine tasting rounds off your day and then you will be returned to your hotel, satiated and content.
  • Discover Burgundy (for 4): What makes Burgundy so special? Choose this tour and you will find out. We start the day with a guided visit to the magnificent Hôtel Dieu. This historic monument first opened its doors to the poor in 1452 and continued as a hospital until 1971. Supported by donations of the famed Burgundian vineyards, the proceeds of the world famous annual wine auction continue to benefit both the Hospice and the town’s modern hospital. A drive through the vineyards follows, where we will visit a local wine cellar for a private visit and tasting of the renowned vin de Bourgogne.
After lunch we will visit Chateauneuf en Auxois and its ancient fortified castle. We will have a guided tour of the refurbished rooms and be privy to one of the region’s first indoor toilets. The day will be rounded of with a visit to a local auberge to taste some of the region’s traditional aperitifs.
  • Vineyard Trails (for 2): Explore the Route des Grands Crus in the company of an experienced private tour guide. Delight in the exalted names of the Cote de Beaune, Puligny Montrachet, Meursault and Pommard. Prefer the Cote de Nuits? Let your experienced local guide introduce you to the wines of Gevrey Chambertin, Vougeot and Vosne Romanée.
Marvel at the terroir of the Cote d’Or, which changes the taste of the humble Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes simply because they are 10 metres apart.
Make your choice and your tour guide will provide all the bookings, the wine tastings and suggest somewhere for lunch. A local lunch, a wine tasting lunch or a Michelin starred lunch – the choice is all yours as you are the one in charge.
  • Introduction to Wine Tasting (for 4): Want to know more about Burgundy wine but don’t know where to start? Engage a private guide to give you and your friends an introductory wine tasting tour of the Côte d’Or. Visit the Côte de Beaune or the Côte de Nuits in the company of an experienced wine tasting guide. Your specialist English speaking guide will organise personal introductions to the grapes, the terroir, the winemakers and the wines. Enjoy all this without having to drive as your expert guide is also your chauffeur for the day.
